Earlier this season, striker Robert Lewandowski netted 5 goals in nine minutes of play. The incredible scoring spree has now been officially recognized by Guinness World Record.

The Polish soccer star was presented with four separate official Guinness World Records certificates for this unbelievable accomplishment. The certificates were presented during a special press conference that took place at Bayern Munich’s ground earlier today.

The five goals scored by Lewandowski during Bayern Munich’s matchup against Wolfsburg back in September broke a series of records:

  • Fastest Bundesliga hat-trick (3 minutes 22 seconds)
  • Fastest Four Goals in a Bundesliga Match (5 minutes 42 seconds)
  • Fastest Five Goals Scored in a Bundesliga Match (8 minutes 59 seconds)
  • Most Goals Scored by a Substitute in a Bundesliga Match (5 goals)

Craig Glenday, Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief, stated: “The sporting world was left in a state of shock and amazement when Lewandowski scored five goals in under 10 minutes – it was truly surreal. It’s not very often you see Guardiola with his hands on his face questioning what had just happened. His achievement will take some beating and is a sporting accolade worthy of entering the Guinness World Record Book.”

The achievement was all the more impressive, and significant, as Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola had opted to leave the player on the bench. With Munich trailing 1-0 at halftime, Robert entered the game after the break and quickly began his historic scoring rout. The first goal occurred on the 51st minute, with four more goals soon following.

At the time of Robert Lewandowski’s incredible scoring performance, Pep Guardiola was quoted saying: “I can’t really understand it. Five goals. Neither as a coach nor as a player did I ever experience something like this and I can’t really explain it.”

Following the historic game in late September, Lewandowski has continued to find the back of the net at an incredible rate. He has scored 14 goals in the Bundesliga so far this season. His dominance on offense this season has helped propel Bayern Munich to an eight point lead ahead of second-place Dortmund. Furthermore, Robert’s five goals in the Champions League have helped the team secure qualification for the knockout stages of the competition.
